Migrating data from Amazon WorkMail

Note

We are currently busy performing QA on our migration tool. We are looking for beta testers. If you are interested, please get in touch.

Amazon has announced that on March 31 2027 support for Amazon WorkMail will end. We are providing a web based migration tool to easily migrate single mailboxes as well as batch migrate a list of mailboxes.

What to prepare before the migration

The following steps need to be taken before starting the migration:

  • you have created your domain and mailboxes in the Manage console
    • to prevent conflicts during the migration we recommend to disable the mailboxes in the Manage console before starting the migration
    • we recommend to only modify the MX records once the data has been migrated
  • when performing a bulk migration we require the "Migration mode" to be enabled in the WorkMail organization
    • to enable the migration mode, log in to the WorkMail console and navigate to "Organization" -> "Migration" -> "Enable Migration Mode"
    • have a WorkMail migration administrator assigned on the same screen
    • the list of mailboxes to be migrated
      • we provide instructions in the migration tool on how to obtain this list
  • when migrating a single mailbox, the "Migration mode" does not need to be enabled, instead the mailbox credentials need to be provided
    • for the single mailbox migration the source and target mailbox need to have the same email address. If the target mailbox is named differently use the bulk migration instead

Starting the Migration

Important

The importer operates in dry run mode by default, meaning no changes are made to your data. We recommend you to test the migration first in dry run mode before performing a full migration. For this a migration can be duplicated to run again with the dry run disabled.

To migrate your users from Amazon WorkMail to myexchange.rocks you need to sign into the Webshop and from there follow the "Manage Your Domain".

The Manage console will show a link to the migration tool once it has been activated for your account.

The web based tool allows you to either migrate a single mailbox (Authenticate as the WorkMail mailbox owner and migrate that mailbox only) or perform a bulk migration via a "migration administrator" account.
